There are at least ten name-brand countertop water filters out there on the market, and even more off-brands from which to choose.  How to make your selection, however, can be somewhat perplexing.  There are some rules of thumb, though, for making sure you end up with a filter that fits your needs, as well as your budget.

First, determine what you want to filter out of your water, as different filter types take different components out of your water.  For example, a water distiller removes the minerals from the water, and that may not be your goal.  Do a little research with your water utility to find out what the concerns may be with the local water – is Giardia (a common waterborne disease) a concern in your area, or do you need to worry about other types of parasites and bacteria?  Knowing what you need to filter out is important to selecting the right countertop water filter.

Once you have determined what you want your filter to do, then you can begin to compare features and prices of the different types of countertop water filters.   Read product reviews posted by folks who have purchased the filters to see how they have worked for real people, and finally, after you have determined which filter you want, shop around a little to get the best deal price-wise.
